C I was tasked with making a social media story post for the Los Angeles Branch of Refusefascism.org. I crated a 13 second video pairing an audio snippet from JLo's super bowel performance clipped in pro tools with some pre established motion graphics that i added some layers and opacities to using Adobe Premier pro.

Understanding the Concept

Every successful motion graphic starts with a solid concept. For Matt, this phase is crucial as it sets the foundation for the entire project. He believes that a clear understanding of the message and target audience is essential. Here’s how he approaches this stage:

  • Research: Matt spends time researching the topic, audience, and existing visuals. This helps him identify gaps and opportunities for creativity.

  • Brainstorming: He often collaborates with his team to brainstorm ideas. This collaborative effort sparks creativity and leads to innovative concepts.

  • Storyboarding: Once a concept is chosen, Matt creates a storyboard. This visual representation outlines the sequence of scenes, helping to visualize the flow of the animation.

Designing the Visual Elements

With a clear concept in mind, Matt moves on to designing the visual elements. This stage is where creativity truly shines. Here are the key steps he follows:

  • Choosing a Style: Matt selects a visual style that aligns with the concept. Whether it’s flat design, 3D animation, or a combination, the style plays a significant role in the overall impact.

  • Color Palette: He carefully chooses a color palette that evokes the desired emotions and complements the brand or message.

  • Typography: The choice of fonts is crucial. Matt selects typography that enhances readability and fits the overall aesthetic of the motion graphic.

Animation Techniques

Once the visual elements are designed, it’s time for the magic of animation to begin. Matt employs various techniques to bring his designs to life:

  • Keyframing: This technique involves setting specific points in time for elements to change. By adjusting these keyframes, Matt creates smooth transitions and movements.

  • Motion Paths: He often uses motion paths to guide elements along a specific route, adding dynamism to the animation.

  • Timing and Spacing: Understanding timing is essential for creating believable animations. Matt pays close attention to the spacing of movements to ensure they feel natural.

Adding Sound and Effects

Sound plays a vital role in enhancing the viewer's experience. Matt integrates sound effects and music to complement the visuals. Here’s how he approaches this aspect:

  • Sound Design: He collaborates with sound designers to create custom sound effects that match the actions in the animation.

  • Music Selection: Choosing the right background music is crucial. Matt selects tracks that resonate with the mood of the animation, enhancing emotional engagement.

Review and Feedback

After completing the initial animation, Matt believes in the power of feedback. He shares the draft with his team and clients to gather insights. This collaborative review process allows for constructive criticism and improvements. Key points include:

  • Revisions: Based on feedback, Matt makes necessary revisions to enhance the animation’s effectiveness.

  • Final Touches: Once the revisions are complete, he adds final touches, such as color correction and additional effects, to polish the animation.

Exporting and Delivery

With the animation finalized, the next step is exporting and delivering the project. Matt ensures that the final product meets the required specifications for various platforms. This includes:

  • Resolution and Format: He exports the animation in different resolutions and formats, ensuring compatibility with various media.

  • Quality Check: Before delivery, Matt conducts a thorough quality check to ensure everything looks and sounds perfect.

Conclusion

Matt Frankel's motion graphics process is a blend of creativity, technical skill, and collaboration. By following a structured approach from concept development to final delivery, he creates stunning animations that captivate audiences. Whether you are a budding motion graphics designer or simply interested in the art form, understanding this process can inspire your own creative journey.

As you explore the world of motion graphics, remember that every great animation starts with a strong concept and a passion for storytelling. What will you create next?
